There have been great battles where nations have met in strife, and one has overcome the other; but who has read of a victory that overcame the world? Some will say that Alexander was its conqueror; but in reality, he was himself the vanquished man, even when all things were in his possession. He fought for the world, and won it; and then mark how it mastered its master, conquered its conqueror, and lashed the monarch who had been its scourge. See the royal youth weeping, and stretching out his hands with idiotic cries, for another world which he might ravage. He seemed, in outward show, to have overcome Old Earth; but, in reality, within his inmost soul, the earth had conquered him, had overwhelmed him, had wrapped him in the dream of ambition, girdled him with the chains of covetousness, so that when he had all, he was still dissatisfied; and, like a poor slave, was dragged on at the chariot wheels of the world, crying, moaning, lamenting, because he could not win another. Who is the man that ever overcame the world? Let him stand forward: he is a Triton among the minnows; he shall outshine Caesar; he shall outmatch even our Wellington, if he can say he has overcome the world. It is so rare a thing, a victory so prodigious, a conquest so tremendous, that he who can claim to have won it may walk among his fellows, like Saul, with head and shoulders far above them. He shall command our respect; his very presence shall awe us into reverence; his speech shall persuade us to obedience; and, yielding honor to whom honor is due, we’ll say when we listen to his voice, “Tis even as if an angel shook his wings.”
When in pain, you generally tend to gravitate towards people who have been there. You have this feeling that if you connect with people who went through the suffering themselves and recovered, you feel rejuvenated. Remember how you could pour your heart about love woes to the friend who’s been through a heart break? When someone gets sick, the immediate intuition would be to call or seek the advice of someone who has already recovered from the same ailment. The same may apply in other instances of failure, loneliness, betrayal, deception, rejection or be it anything. Someone who has gone through all this is the best source of truth, insight and reality into the situation.
This same thing applies for everyone of us. We live in a world where Weaknesses, loneliness, deception, rejection, betrayal have a normal norm of the society we live in. Social & workplace issues and family & relationships issues develop into an emotional and mental breakdown. Rejection by the people we love most is the scariest of all.
Most of these, when affects our lives we have no choice to opt. There are no reasons to go on. Life seems to be purposeless, meaningless and aimless. There does not seem to be any brighter side to what has happened. Discouragement and brokenness, disheartened and bitterness is all what remains.
Most of the times when these things happen we must understand that there is a brighter side of this. You might ask me is there anyone who has seem a brighter side.
In the Bible, Jesus says” “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Is’nt it so wonderful? Who else has ever, said something powerful & dynamic like this. “That I have overcome the world”. This Jesus went through all of the same life situations what we have or might go through. Even though he was God, he took the form of man. Left the splendors of heaven and came down to the wretched world to demonstrate & show mankind that what he had created has the power to overcome through Him.
Peace and happiness are possible in a troubled world, but the key to achieving them is locked up in the fact that Jesus overcame the world and in and through Him, we can also. Life must be built on eternal truth. Not on pop Psychology, neo-philosophy, success-motivation or inspirations. Life should be based on the reality and truth.*
Even though Jesus came into this world to seek the lost he was despised and rejected; though he came to show love and compassion, he was betrayed and humiliated. Though he healed every sick and brought the dead back to life, he was physically tortured. He was hung on the cross to die.
But death could not hold him, the grave could not hide him. He rose up from the dead. And is still alive. He is still working the same things that he did when he was on earth. What are you doing to him, how are you responding to his love for you. No matter what, he still loves and cares for you !
And that is why before he ascended back to heaven, he made sure to let you know , “Be cheerful, In this world you will have trouble, but I have overcome this world, and you too can overcome in my name and through my power.”
